EAGLES VS CHIEFS-A PERFECT STORM?
The Chiefs are terrible, the Chiefs have been terrible for a very long time. However this week in their game against the Eagles it looks like some factors detremental to the birds could be creating the perfect storm for the Chiefs.
First and most obvious Donovan McNabb is out. A McNabb led team would surely have no trouble against the Chiefs. A Kolb led team however? Well its a bit to soon to say what a Kolb let team is capable of doing.
The second set of storm clouds coming in is injuries. Brian Westbrook is questionable, and so is Desean Jackson, although it is reported that Jackson participated in a full practice session on Friday. Westbrook is the Eagles #1 back and a veteran presence in the huddle which is a big benefit for Kolb. McCoy does play almost an identical style to Westbrook but this is only his 3rd NFL game and he is not yet Brian Westbrook. Jackson of course with 2 tds in his first two games of the year is the Eagles #1 play making WR and also the target Kolb seemed most comfortable with in his first start., while it looks like he will play if he isn’t 100% it could affect the game.
What looks to be the sun in the distance is actual more clouds in disguise. Michael Vick is eligible this game. Now before you get excited let me tell you why this might not necessarily be a good thing. In the preseason Vick was used sporadically coming in for one play every so often and McNabb would line up at WR or run to the sideline. Donovan McNabb is a veteran QB and this on and off the field routine created by the presence of Vick isn’t a distraction for McNabb. Kevin Kolb however is making only his second start in the NFL, if Vick is used the same way he was in preseason then it could be hard for Kolb to find a rythmn.
Before I end this article I want to throw out a worst case scenario, there is a rule in the NFL that isn’t very well known and it goes like this. A team may use 2 QB’s during the game, if however for some reason they must use their 3rd QB most likely because of injury QB #1 and QB #2 may not come back into the game.
What does this mean for the Eagles? Well say Kolb is injured for an undetermined amount of time in the game. If Andy Reid has already used Vick in the game he is left with 2 options. One use Vick as the only QB until Kolb can come back into the game (Vick of course from a passing perspective is not even close to ready to lead this team). Or option number 2, he can bring in Jeff Garcia, which means two things. One Kolb and Vick can no longer come back into the game, and two if Garcia goes down with an injury someone with absolutely no QB experience will have to take over. Worst case scenario obviously but this actually happened in week 1. Which game you ask? well in the Eagles game it happened to the Panthers!
Now that I have scared everyone with my worst case scenarios and perfect storm I will say lets hope for a healthy Kevin Kolb, Desean Jackson, and Brian Westbrook. Here is hoping the Birds don’t let what should be an easy win fall through the cracks.
