Home Blown (EAGLES Sept 20)

This was a stink fest disguised behind the numbers. On paper it looks like it should had been a competitive game. Lacking in defense of course. Drew Brees had his usual day at the office. Kevin Kolb did okay for his first start. His numbers were above average but he did throw 2 costly pic’s and a third one to end of the game.

While Ryan breaks down the game for us, I thought I would just add a couple observations.

2 straight games the Eagles allowed a team to march down the field on the opposing teams opening drive for a TD
Andy and the Wildcat is a recipe for disaster. Honestly I don’t get how a self respecting Defense can be fooled by the blatant sham of a play. I mean do you really think DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin or Westbrook is going to pass the ball other than once in a blue moon? And Westbrook shows you the kind of pass you would get. If you are a defending the Wildcat, how do you not push everything up field and send the de facto QB outside to people cutting off the sidelines. The minute you see an WR or RB taking a snap, you blitz, that simple. Just make sure you close off the running lanes behind you. Don’ tell me you can’t single cover a QB on the outside. Now if Vick or a former QB is doing it, well then that is more than the Wildcat. But too much gimmickry is too much. It looks like it was successful, but at the end of the day what did it get you?
And Andy is a genius and an idiot at the same time. When you play a prolific offensive team like the New Orleans Brees’s you have to dominate the time of possession. Now I know at times that is a useless stat but in this type of game it isn’t. You need to run the ball more than 21 times. And not feel the need to heave the ball over 50 times! Oh and 3 of the rushing attempts were DeSean Jackson’s Wildcat runs.
I would like to say the difference was turnovers. And the Saints did turn 3 turnovers into scores. But 48 minus 21 is still 27!
Back to the run and pass thing. Notice that the Saints make you think Brees/pass right? And yet Brees threw 34 passes to 29 rushing attempts by Saints RB’s! I get so sick of people over looking the fat that pass offenses use the pass to set up the run not eliminate it. Reid makes the Eagles one dimensional too many times deliberately.
I am not sure what to think of McDermott and his Defensive calls. The rush defense was ick and poo.
Brent Celek had a nice day.
DeSean Jackson had a good game also but apparently is hurt already.
Kolb did throw a few beauties.
Eagles had 7 penalties to the Saints 3.
Reggie Bush is a fraud and yet he burned the Birds for a big run.
