PHILLIES 2010!
Phillies.com offered 10 questions for 2010 and we have gone through questions 10,9,8,and 7. So let’s pick it up at #6.
Question 6:
How concerned should fans be about the bullpen?
Very concerned.Very, very concerned.
-
You’re praying that Madson regains dominance. He had some shaky parts of 2009
-
You are praying and doing native dances in hopes that Lidge will return as a real closer
-
You are beseeching the baseball gods that J C Romero will be healthy
-
You hope Chad Durbin can be solid for an entire year
-
You desperately need new guy Danny Baez will be better than his 4+ ERA is
-
What will Escalona be?
-
Drew Naylor from down under?
-
Mike Zagurski?
-
Will guys like Drew Carpenter, Kyle Kendrick, J C Rameriz and Antonio Bastardo need to be factors?
-
Is there anything about the bullpen that doesn’t worry you? Maybe Madson is the only safe bet
Question 5:
Who is going to be the fifth starter?
Many would say Jamie Moyer. But he is still not healthy. Kyle Kendrick would be a likely suspect. You could decide to roll the dice on a younger kid like Bastardo or Carpenter.
Today? I would give Kendrick a shot. He is young but he is also experienced.
Question 4:
Which Raul Ibanez will show up to play?
Okay let’s be honest he never recovered from the mid season injuries. He didn’t have a great playoffs but he did have his moments. He had a sports hernia operation since the season ended.
I think if you rest him a little more he will have a solid to strong season. But I am already on record that he is a 3 year Phillies player and no more.
Question 3:
Can the Phillies sign Jayson Werth to a contract extension?
Can they? Yes
Will they? I don’t think so. I think he is the odd man out. With the contracts of Howard, Rollins, Victorino, Werth, Lidge, Ibanez all looming decisions have to be made. Utley is in that mix somewhere also. So for me Ibanez goes as does Lidge.
That leaves Howard, Utley, Rollins, Victorino, Werth. IF the Phillies are still at a strict budget then one of these has to go. Which means it is Werth or Victorino in my book. I would keep Shane over Werth.
Truth be told I would keep both, but if you are Amaro Werth has too high of a price tag and Dominic Brown is coming. You got Francisco and Mayberry in the mix for now also.
