Oh I hate those stupid commercials! But in the case of “J D Is Werth” Ruben Amaro and the Phillies need to step up.

I get the Howard signing and applaud it. Now sign Werth! It is easier than the Phillies want you to believe. In fact I have outlined before. Toward the end of last year I laid out the simple plan.

It is all about Raul “Pat Burrell” Ibanez. There is no shot that he is here past his 3 year deal. 2011 will be the latest you see Ibanez in a Phillies uniform. If it is not than Amaro should be fired immediately. Add the fact that there is little too no chance any one wants Ibanez at his present contract.

With those 2 facts in hand simply back load a deal for Werth. End of story. He has probably played his way to a $17,000,000 per year deal already, why wait until he flirts with more!

4 years times $17 MILLY is a cool $68,000,000. Pay him $10,000,000 and $10,000,000 for 2 years and then $24,000,000 and $24,000,000 for the last 2. You may end up over paying him over all but that is probably the case with Howard also. But you will be underpaying him for a couple years also so it equals itself out.

For Werth it shouldn’t matter. The money is guaranteed so why should he care?

You can also get very clever. With Dominic Brown in the wings you could part with Victorino after this year or next and that would ease the pain of the Werth decision. You also have Jamie Moyer money disappearing at the end of this season. As well as you should say Sayonara to Lidge and his hefty deal!

This is a no brainer and could be done by the weekend without impacting the self imposed salary cap the Phillies have maintained.
