MOVES BEGIN! (Phillies Nov 9)

REUBEN? The time is yours buddy!

  1. Phillies take a pass on Brett Myers: I’m good with this one. Myers has had his moments in Philly and he has been a good sport at times. But he has also come across like a petulant child at other times. To his credit he is a competitor. Then again he has had some injury problems. His performance and lack of availability doesn’t justify the money he wants. Give that money to LEE for an extension, end of story. Thanks Brett and have a mediocre career in a nice place, nothing personal my man.
  2. Phillies don’t exercise option for Feliz: This one I disagree with. By today’s standards Pedro Feliz $5.5 million option is nothing. Even if you have a plan to bring someone else in that will upgrade the position why not just sign him and trade him later? Let’s face it teams can do a lot worse than Pedro Feliz. He is still a very good to great 3rd baseman. Yeah he is not the greatest hitter, but he never really was. This was a no brainer for me. Take the option and pursue the player or players you targeted and if you land them trade Feliz. Very simple and safe plan. The worst that could hapopen is that Feliz is your 3rd baseman for one more season.
  3. Speaking of Pedro’s: I’m sahaking your hand MArtinez and thanking you for your valiant efforts but you are a desperation plan for me next year. So if you want to sit around til July or August again and hope we need you that I might consider. But your arm is not going to make it throuhg an entire season.
  4. Jamie Moyer: With Lee, Hamels, Happ, and Blanton as my starting rotation I can’t see having a 4th lefty in the starting rotation. Personally I would love it if Moyer would sign as a pitching coach. Sorry Rich Dubee, I was never a believer. Yeah you are a smart and classy man but I do not see the results of your pitching wizardry. Even Blanton, who I thought was your best work, ran out of gas. Conditioning is a part of your job in my opinion.
  5. Lidge, Ibanez, and Eyre to go under the knife: With the young Outfielders coming up and Ben Francisco handy I am not as aworried with Ibanez. Lidge? He already has one leg out the door for me and Reuben needs to bring in bull pen arms and/or bring them up regardless of what happens with Lidge. Which brings us to Eyre. How many question marks do you want to bring back?
  6. Phillies reporstedly paid out in the neighborhood of $140 Million counting present and past salaries owed and part time players and bonuses. This committed for 2010.

Once the Phillies pick up Cliff Lee’s $9 million option for next season, they will have roughly $103.5 million committed to 12 players:

  1. Ryan Howard: $19 million
  2. Brad Lidge: $11.5 million
  3. Chase Utley: $15 million
  4. Raul Ibanez: $11.5 million
  5. Jimmy Rollins: $7.5 million
  6. Jamie Moyer: $8 million
  7. Cliff Lee: $9 million
  8. Cole Hamels: $6.65 million
  9. J.C. Romero: $4 million
  10. Jayson Werth: $7 million
  11. Ryan Madson: $4.5 million
  12. Greg Dobbs: $1.35 million

I say you knock off Moyer’s $8 million if someone will take him and Romero’s $4 million as he is an injury waiting to happen. Dobbs? Well we need a stronger bench so I would let him go unless you don’t have a better plan. It’s only $1.35 Million. It’s  Feliz scenario to me.

      7.  There is the Blanton question: I was presuming he would be back but with arbitration looming he may get a raise to the tune of $7 million from $5.4 he presently makes. IS Blanton worth that? Maybe with a 12 and 8, 4.05 ERA. But with RH pitchers like Brad Penny, Jason Marquis, Rich Harden, Joel Piniero,John Garland, and Ben Sheets out there who knows what Reuben and the brass think. Blanton did run out of gas in my opinion. Although Blanton has health in his corner compared to most of the players listed as options. And is it impossible to think that Reuben won’t go after big time arms like Halliday?

      8.  3rd base?: Beltre? Coming off injury and and he made $13.4 Million! He has had Gold Glove years and 25 HR+ years. But he has had ghost years. Chone Figgins? True Lead off man. But hen where does Rollins hit? 2nd? then move Victorino to 7th? That might not be so bad if Victorino is on board.

      9. Antee up for Werth?: You may want totake care of this now.

     10. Who is out there for the bench?
