How was the 2009 club? Let’s start with 1 - 8 in the line up!
Jimmy Rollins: J-Roll did not have a great year at the plate. He won his 3rd GOLD GLOVE however! He hit a blah .250 and that was a result of a monster hot streak. His overall numbers are not shabby for the year he had. Scored 100 runs, 43 Doubles, 5 triples, 21 HR’s, 77 RBI’s, and 31 Stolen bases. The disappointing part is that his on base percentage was not good. .296 is not good enough for a lead off hitter especially.
In the end he is J-Roll and he is the heart and soul of this team.
Shane Victorino: Had his best overall season! Won his 2nd GOLD GLOVE on CF! He hit .292, scored 102 runs, 39 Doubles, 13 Triples, 10 HR’s, 62 RBI’s, 25 Stolen bases, and on base percentage of .358! ALL – STAR 2009!
In the end this guy is energy and a spark plug. He is Jimmy Rollins shadow.
Chase Utley: Silver Slugger Award winner! Hit .282, scored 112 runs, 39 doubles, 4 triples, 31 HR’s, 93 RBI’s, 23 stolen bases. The quintessential #3 hitter. % HR’s in the World Series was nice to see also. Potential Gold Glove 2B. ALL - STAR 2009
In the end Chase and J-Roll are the backbone of the team. Utley is the gritty guy,the Jeter like player. I do hope that next year they get someone who can spell Utley some. I think he needs to play more like 145 – 150 games per season.
Ryan Howard: The “BIG PIECE” was the catalyst again! He was Cadillac too with 45 HR’s, 141 RBI’s, 37 Doubles, 4 Triples, 105 runs scored, and 8 stolen bases. On base percentage of .360. He hit a solid .279 for theyear. Howard played very well at 1B this season. ALL – STAR 2009!
In the end Howard is the back this team rides on through out the year. That won’t change any time soon.
Jayson Werth: This was a break out year for the 5 tool man. He hit.268 and clubbed 36 HR’s and 99 RBI’s. He added 26 doubles and 20 stolen bases also. He scored 98 runs. Played a steller Right Field. On base percentage of .373. ALL – STAR 2009!
In the end Werth has arrived. He has proven that his being a 1st round draft pick was no fluke. He is finally past the injuries he had early in his career.
Raul Ibanez: Great free agent pick – up. RA-UUUUUUUL! He did sputter in 2nd half though almost in Burrell-esque fashion. He is 37 and had a groin injury/sports hernia also. Overall he hit .272, 34 HR’s, 32 Doubles, 93 RBI’s , scored 93 runs, and on base percentage of .347. ALL – STAR 2009!
In the end Ibanez is a stop gap measure to one of the young studs. Either Dominic Brown or Micahel Taylor from the farm.
Pedro Feliz: Still can glove them at 3rd with the best of them. Had a solid year at the plate. His 154 hits were the most he ever had in a season. He hit .266 with 30 doubles and 12 HR’s and a nice 82 RBI’s out of the 7th hole. His 580 at bats showed he had a healthy year.
In the end the Phillies dceided to take a pass on his contract option. He still could be resigned but I think Feliz is moving on. I would keep him for another year. Unless you land a replacement for sure. Plus he could be a utility guy. Not sure he would want to do that though.
Carlos Ruiz: He has become a very good potential All – Star as a catcher. He has his moments as a hitter also. He hit .255 for the year. He had 9 HR’s and 43 RBI’s. He only played in 107 games though. He had an on base percentage of .355! That is great for an 8 hole hitter. Charlie thinks he can hit .275 – ish.
In the end he is a catcher first and formeost. Does have a flare for coming alive in the post season somewhat. And who knows if he can get a little better at the plate he will anchor the bottom of the order.
